Fall Financial Check-Up: 4 Simple Ways to Get Peace of Mind with Your Money

Fall is in full swing, routines are back, and before we know it, the holidays will be right around the corner.

Too often, we wait until March or tax season to look at our finances. The problem? By then, the year is already behind us, and there is not much left to adjust.

Taking just half an hour this fall to check in on your accounts can save you a lot of stress in January. Here are four simple, everyday steps you can take right now:

1. Plan for holiday expenses today

Between gifts, festive dinners, and get-togethers, the end of the year always costs a bit more than expected.

Rather than putting everything on a credit card in December, start setting aside a small amount each week or paycheque starting today.

Even $25 or $50 a week makes a huge difference in avoiding surprises when January bills arrive.

2. Spread out your savings instead of rushing at the deadline

If you put money aside for retirement or long-term goals (such as in an RRSP or TFSA), you do not need to wait until the winter deadline to write one large cheque.

Contributing $50 a month automatically is much easier on your budget than trying to come up with $600 all at once in February.

Fall is the ideal time to check whether your automatic contributions still match your budget or could use a slight tune-up.

3. Gather your receipts before they get misplaced

Most of us have receipts tucked away in drawers or scattered across our inboxes:

  • Medical receipts: pharmacy, dental work, eyeglasses, or physiotherapy.

  • Charitable donation receipts.

Put them all into a single folder—whether paper or digital—as you receive them. When tax time rolls around in the spring, filing will be quick and painless.

4. Review your priorities for the coming year

Personal finance is not just about numbers; it is about your life plans.

  • Are you planning home renovations next summer?

  • Thinking about buying or replacing a vehicle?

  • Planning a family vacation?

Talking through your plans ahead of time helps you know how much to save without tightening your belt unnecessarily.

Wrapping up the year on the right foot

Fall always seems to fly by, and January arrives faster than we expect. Taking a short moment to see where you stand today sets the stage for a smooth, stress-free start to 2027.

Could you use a helping hand or a second set of eyes to review your priorities? We are here to support you—simply, clearly, and at your own pace.
